“Are you sure you want to do this? Because no one would fault you if you changed your mind,” Brian said to Justin as he turned down the street to Deb’s house.

“It’s fine, Brian. I don’t mind,” Justin said. “It might actually be fun.”

“Dream on, Sunshine.”

“You never know.” Justin shrugged as the Jeep came to a stop. He opened the door and waited for Brian on the sidewalk.

“Oh, yes I do,” Brian said as he made his way to the door. He knocked, but didn’t wait for an answer before opening the door.

“Brian!” Deb screeched. “It’s about time you got here. You’re late. Did you bring Justin with you?”

“He’s right here,” Brian said, his hands massaging Justin’s shoulders as he led the blond to the kitchen. “As promised.”

“What the fuck?” Michael exclaimed as he banged his glass on the table.

“None of that,” Deb said as she smacked her son on the back of his head. “You be nice to Justin.”

“Can you move, Mikey?” Brian asked as he nudged his friend on the shoulder.

“What the fuck? You’re making me move for him?”

Brian sat down in the chair next to Michael and pulled Justin into his lap. “Well, I guess he can just sit on my lap if you don’t want to move.”

Michael grumbled as he pushed his plate to the other side of the table and sat in the chair next to Emmett. He glared as Brian slung his arm around the back of Justin’s chair, and clenched his fork in his fist.

“The food smells great, Debbie,” Justin said as he helped himself to the pasta and garlic bread.

“I can already feel my arteries clogging,” Brian said as he poured wine for him and Justin. He turned to face Lindsay and asked, “Where’s Gus?”

“He’s at home with the babysitter,” Lindsay answered as she wiped the side of her mouth. She took a long drink of her wine before continuing. “I had no idea who you were bringing tonight, and I don’t want Gus around one of your tricks, or whatever Justin is.”

Justin paused, his fork halfway to his mouth before setting it back on the side of his plate.

“No offense to you,” Lindsay said to Justin.

“Fuck, Lindsay.” Brian shook his head. “Do you honestly think I would bring some random trick to a family dinner?”

“How the fuck were we supposed to know?” Melanie cut in. “The idea of you being around anybody longer than it takes you to get your rocks off shocks the hell out of me.”

“Brian, you have to understand.” Lindsay sighed. “Until Mel and I get to know someone, we don’t want Gus around them. You know how attached he gets to people. Gus would be devastated if he got attached and then one day Justin just wasn’t around anymore.”

“Bring him next time,” Brian said.

“We’ll see.” Melanie glared at Brian.

“So, Justin, what do you do?” Emmett asked. He took a sip of his wine and leaned his elbows on the table.

“I’m a student at PIFA,” Justin answered.

“That’s a great school,” Lindsay commented. “It’s incredibly difficult to get into. They only admit around 70 new students a year. What’s your major?”

“I'm majoring in Fine Arts, but I like to try a little of everything.”

“Melanie and I have tickets for an upcoming show there in the music department. Maybe we’ll see you there.”

“Maybe.” Justin nodded, keeping a tight-lipped smile on his face. There was no way he would go anywhere near that particular concert. It was PIFA’s annual Violin Recital. This year it was starring none other than Ethan Gold.

“I hear the young man performing is really cute.” Lindsay gave Justin a wink.

“Yeah,” Melanie agreed. “Maybe you’ll even meet some nice young men there. Some who are more age appropriate for you.”

Brian glared at Melanie and flipped her off before returning to his meal. He kept his arm securely around Justin’s shoulders.

“So what year are you, Justin?” Debbie asked.

“I’m a sophomore.”

“So how’d you get mixed up with Brian?” Melanie asked as she picked up her wine glass and rested her elbow on the table.

“I met him at the diner. We fucked. And the rest is history,” Brian cut in.

“I was talking to Justin, asshole,” Melanie said. She turned to face Justin. “Justin, how the fuck did you get mixed up with the asshole?”

“Well, Brian pretty much got the gist of it.” Justin shrugged his shoulders. “And he’s not an asshole.”

“Please,” Melanie scoffed.

“Justin, I bet you have some pretty interesting projects going on,” Emmett said. He didn’t want this to turn into another dinner with Melanie and Brian snarking at each other all night.

“Some are more interesting than others. I know it’s good to be disciplined in various areas, but I like it best when we have free reign on projects. We’re doing a still life right now. I just need to find a subject and convince them to pose for me.”

“You should ask Brian,” Emmett suggested with a smile. “He’d be perfect.”

“Yeah right,” Michael said. “Brian has better things to do with his time than sit while Justin draws his little pictures. He has a business to run. Right, Ted?” He turned to his friend for confirmation.

Ted, who up until this point was merely an observer, could feel the eyes on him even before he looked up. He tugged the napkin out from his collar and set it on the table.

“Well, actually—”

“Ha, see! I’m right!” Michael smiled smugly and crossed his arms on his chest.

“I was going to say,” Ted said. “That even though Kinnetik is still in its first year, Brian has excellent managerial skills. Thus, leaving plenty of time for any extracurricular activities that he should wish to engage in.”

“Smooth, Teddy,” Emmett said.

“That’s such shit!” Michael screeched at Ted before focusing on Brian. “Just the other day you were telling me how busy Kinnetik kept you.”

Brian rubbed the back of his neck and sighed. “It does keep me busy, Michael. But it doesn’t take up all of my time.”

“Like the prick would help him anyway. He’d probably be too busy getting his dick sucked in the backroom of Babylon,” Melanie commented.

“I’m sure that you’ll be able to find someone who can help you, Justin,” Lindsay said in a sympathetic voice. “Maybe a friend from school can pose for you.”

“Fuck that,” Brian said. “I’ll do it.”

“C’mon, Brian.” Lindsay tilted her head. “You’re not the most reliable person. You shouldn’t promise something if you’re not going to be able to follow through.”

“If Brian says he'll do it, then he will. He's never once let me down." Justin turned to Brian and gave him a brilliant smile. "Thank you, for everything."

“So, Justin,” Deb said. “Do you live in the dorms? Or are you living off campus?” She wanted to get the words straight from the horse’s mouth.

“I’m living off campus. PIFA doesn’t have the best dorms.”

“I bet they’re a palace compared to that dump you were living in.” Brian playfully elbowed Justin in the ribs.

“That, and living on campus is expensive,” Justin added. “Student loans only cover so much.”

“Where are you living now?” Debbie tried to ask as nonchalantly as she could.

“He’s living with me,” Brian answered.

“Since when?”

“We just moved the rest of his stuff in this weekend.”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Debbie asked.

“Of course. That’s why I suggested it,” Brian said.

“I was talking to Justin.” She smiled sweetly, almost apologetically, at the blond. “Won’t you be uncomfortable when he brings his tricks home?”

“Uh…” Justin paused. He wasn’t sure how he should answer. He didn’t want to say something in front of everyone that would affect Brian’s life too much. “We have an arrangement. One that is between me and Brian.”

Brian leaned back in his chair, and his fingers idly played with the hair at the nape of Justin’s neck.

“I can only imagine what kind of ‘arrangement’ Brian has cornered you into.” Melanie rolled her eyes and refilled her wine glass.

“Actually, Mel, it was me who suggested the arrangement,” Justin countered.

“I’m sure, sweetie,” Melanie said in a condescending voice.

“You’re awfully young to be living with someone,” Debbie added. “You should be out there dating. You’re in college. Now is a time to have fun and experience life.”

“Believe me, I’ve had enough life experience to last me a lifetime,” Justin said.

“I’m just saying that you shouldn’t settle.”

“Thanks a lot, Deb.” Brian sighed and continued to play with Justin’s hair.

"Actually," Justin said as he grinned playfully at Brian. "I don't consider living with Brian as settling. As a matter of fact, I consider it one of my better decisions."

“You know I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant—“ Debbie struggled to find the right words. When she couldn’t she decided to change the subject. “Who wants desert?”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Justin sank into the sofa and watched as Debbie fixed the desert plates. Brian sat down next to him and leaned his head back and sighed.

“Hey.” Justin bumped Brian’s leg with his.

“Hey,” Brian replied, not taking his gaze away from the ceiling. Even though he knew what to expect coming over, he didn’t think he’d feel this drained. One of the bright spots of the evening was that he would be able to spend more time with Gus, but since the Munchers left him at home, he hadn’t even got that.

Justin turned to look at Brian. He still couldn’t believe the way his friends talked about him; or at least, his son’s mothers, and the woman who he called his surrogate mother. All night he wanted to say more, but he’d bitten his tongue. He wished he could have defended Brian more.

“Hey, asshole, are you just going to sit there, or are you going to move your fucking legs?” Melanie shoved Brian’s legs out of her way with her feet.

Justin wanted to point out that she could have gone around the other side of the coffee table like everyone else did.

“Are you sure you don’t want any cheesecake, Justin?” Deb asked as she sat down in the recliner. “We have plenty.”

“No thanks, Debbie.” Justin smiled politely. “I don't seem to have much of an appetite around here.”

“So who’s up for Babylon tonight?” Michael asked. “Brian?”

“Not tonight, Mikey. Maybe tomorrow.”

“Brian,” Michael whined.

“We were just out last night.” Brian said as he leaned forward and rubbed his face with his palms. “And I don’t think I could stay awake for it even if I wanted to.”

“Ted? Emmett?” Michael turned to the two men sitting on the floor.

“I have a meeting with a client early in the morning,” Emmett answered. “The woman is insisting on this horrible tangerine and hot pink theme. I’m doing everything I can to talk her out of it.”

Brian, Ted and Michael all glared at him.

“What?” Emmett asked.

“Need we remind you of your outfit last night?” Ted asked, raising his eyebrow.

“Pft.” Emmett waved the comment off. “I know how to carry it off. She can’t,” he reasoned.

“Okay,” Ted said slowly, with smile. He glanced at his watch and pushed himself up off the floor. “I think I’m gonna head on home.” His movements were slow as he made his way to the kitchen to put his plate in the sink.

“I think I’m gonna go ahead and go, too,” Emmett said. He joined Ted in the kitchen and rinsed off his plate. “Can I catch a ride with you, Teddy?”

“Yeah, of course,” Ted answered.

The door closed quietly behind the two men and the room was left in silence.

“Lindsay, I want to take Gus to the movies on Saturday,” Brian said suddenly.

“This Saturday?” Lindsay asked.

“Yes, this Saturday,” Brian said. “Is there something wrong with this Saturday?”

“Well don’t you think it’s kind of short notice?” Melanie asked.

“I would think that I wouldn’t need any notice to spend time with my son. Do I need to remind you that I still have my parental rights? And that you can’t keep me from seeing him.”

“All I have to do is make my case in front of a judge. I’d have your rights in a second,” Melanie said.

“That’s fucking bullshit.”

“Come off it, Brian. With the way you turn tricks, it’s amazing that you haven’t caught anything yet.” Melanie shook her head in disgust. “Gus is much better off with Lindsay and me.”

“Have my son ready for me Saturday morning,” Brian said to Lindsay as he stood up. He turned to Justin and handed him the keys to the Jeep. “Here, you drive.”

Justin held the keys tightly in his hand and walked with Brian out to the Jeep. He started the ignition and glanced over at the passenger seat. Brian had reclined it slightly, and he appeared to he half asleep. He opened his mouth to speak but no words came out.

“Don’t say anything,” Brian mumbled, his eyes still closed. “It’s fine.

“How do you know I was going to say something?” Justin asked as he pulled out on the road.

“You do this sighing thing.” Brian answered.

“Oh.” Justin smiled.

The remainder of the drive to the loft was made in silence. Justin would occasionally glance at Brian and wonder how he dealt with everything. He kept his comments to himself, and before he knew it he was pulling up in front of the loft. Neither man noticed the dark car that had followed them from Debbie's house.

Brian adjusted the seat upright and got out. He heard the chirp of the alarm and slung his arm around Justin as the rode the elevator up to the loft. The door opened before him and he didn’t even bother hanging up his clothes. He let them fall to the floor as he made his way to the bed. The sheets felt soft and cool against his skin.

Justin set the alarm and picked Brian’s clothes off the floor. He might not care now, but in the morning Justin knew Brian would have a fit if he knew his favorite red Armani shirt was left to wrinkle. After he hung up the clothes, he undressed and slid in next to Brian. He rested on his back and closed his eyes. When the arm snaked around his waist, and the face was buried in the crook of his neck, he was already sound asleep.

I never liked the way Melanie and Lindsay used Brian in regards to Gus. I like it being pointed out so starkly. I was irritated all through this chapter by the behavior of his so called family. I'm curious how you will resolve the issues you brought up here. Custody and Mikey's constant whining. Good chapter!

I always hated the way they treated him too. And he did so much for Gus, and them. Thanks so much for reviewing.

Wow, that was tough to read with Deb, Michael, Mel, and Lindsay all ganging up on Brian like that. It will be interesting to see how all those relationships develop. Looking forward to the next chapter.

I am enjoying "Makes Me Wonder" very much. I like the way you have the chapters set up, as I like to re-read the previous chapter before I start the new one. This keeps a continuous flow to the story.
Everything is canon, but more emphasis is placed on the separate parts, as Ethan is more than jealous, the family is more than condemning, Michael is more than obnoxious, which focuses our attention on some of the underplay better than the original did.

Looking forward to more!

The family....well, I'm not always big fans of them. Let's just hope they get better down the road.

Thanks so much for reviewing.

I really liked this chapter, it was full of tension... I've always hated how quickly Mel, Debbie, Michael and even Lindsay put down Brian ALL the time, but still went to him for help. I can imagine it must've been hard for Justin to see, considering how Brian has helped him...
Loved the final image of Justin sleeping next to Brian. Very comforting.
Great!

So very true. And Brian never stopped helping, no matter what they said to or about him.

Thanks so much for reviewing. :)

I think you took everything I hated about Michael, Deb, Lindsay and Melanie and put it all in this chapter. :P I wish Justin had been able to just lay into them all. I'm just happy Emmett and Ted were on B/J's side.

Brian noticing Justin's sighing habit shows how much Brian cares about Justin. With Brian, it's always the little things like that.

Curious about the black car... Ethan? Are we going to get to see the trip to the movies?

I tend to write Michael, Debbie, Lindsay and Melanie bad. I don't know why.

I LOVE Ted and Emmett. Don't think I could ever make them bad. More creepy!Ethan will definitely be coming in the next chapters.

I think that the girls and Mikey need to be shot - they are so nasty. I'm actually pleased that Justin has seen this behaviour - I think that it will really help in his relationship with Brian. I also liked seeing protective Brian - this behaviour always leaves a warm feeling.
I'm looking forward to seeing Justin interact with Gus.
I enjoyed reading this.

I just love this fic, but with friends like Brian's who needs another enemy like ethan! Jeez they treat him so bad...Justin was shocked by it, too bad brian wasn't, he knew going in what it would be. Thank goodness for Justin.

Looking forward ot the next chapter! Especially looking forward to Brian posing for Justin, that could prove to be very hard to paint, LOL! Who could concentrate looking at that beauty.

It's true... That whole dinner at Deb's episode was horrible. The way they treat Brian... I'd tell them where to stick it. I am sooo irritated by them, but your story is so good. I've read all 7 chapters and want to read more NOW! LOL!
