“Care to explain what that was all about?” Brian asked as he and Justin sat down in a booth at the back of the diner. He signaled for Kiki to bring over some coffee.

Justin took a menu and looked through it as he tried to decide the best way to answer. He waited until Kiki took their order and left before answering. “It didn’t start out like this. At first it wasn’t so bad.”

“How did it start?” Brian poured an obscene amount of sugar into his coffee, never taking his eyes off Justin.

“He would call constantly. I’d be at school, and when I’d check my messages after class, there’d be like 5 new ones from him. Most of it was just him begging me to call him, and give him a second chance. I called him back once to tell him to leave me alone; that us going out again as a couple would never happen. But I think that just made it worse.”

Justin took a deep breath and continued. “The messages then started to get more frightening, with him telling me that we belong together, and that if he couldn’t have me then no one would. There’d even be times when he would play his violin.”

Brian couldn’t help but smirk at that. “Did you try going to the police? Play the messages for them?”

“Yeah.” Justin nodded. “That was the first thing I did, but they told me it wasn’t their job to settle problems with my boyfriend.”

“Figures.” Brian shook his head.

“That was when I got my number changed. But that was also when I started seeing Ethan everywhere I went. He’d be outside my classes, and somehow he found out where I lived. I guess, since he followed me everywhere, I shouldn’t have been surprised,” Justin paused as Kiki placed their food and the check on the table. “I thought about going back to the police, but seeing as how they reacted to me previously, I figured it’d be pointless.”

“And is this where I come in?” Brian asked as he cut into his egg white omelet.

“Yeah,” Justin answered. He pushed the scrambled eggs around on his plate with his fork.

“But if he’s been watching you, then wouldn’t he know if you were seeing someone or not?”

“I didn’t even think about it like that. Fuck.”

“Well, he can’t be too bright if he keeps following you around after you made it clear you weren’t interested.”

Justin scratched the back of his neck, and rested his elbow on the table. “I was really hoping to get rid of him.”

“Look, if you want, you can stay with me for the weekend,” Brian offered.

“Really?” Justin perked up. His apartment didn’t have the best security, so there were times he’d found Ethan right outside his door.

“Sure, why not.” Brian shrugged.

“Thanks.”

“And just who do we have here?” A voice asked.

Brian looked over, saw Emmett and Ted standing at the head of the table and smirked. “This is Justin.”

“He’s so cute,” Emmett said as he sat down, not bothering to wait for an invitation. “Don’t you think so Ted?”

“Uh, sure,” Ted answered hesitantly. He took off his coat and sat down next to Brian.

“So where did you meet Brian?” Emmett asked Justin. “I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before.”

“Actually, I met Brian my first time on Liberty Avenue,” Justin answered. It was the truth too. Before yesterday, he had never ventured into the neighborhood.

“So that explains it. He was keeping you all to himself.”

“That’s right,” Brian said. “New relationships tend to be like that.”

Ted nearly choked on the coffee Kiki had just poured for him. “Did you say relationship?”

“That’s so sweet,” Emmett said, covering his mouth with his fingers.

“Hiya, boys.” The red wigged waitress from the day before walked up to their table.

“Debbie,” Brian said through a forced smile.

“Did Michael find you? He came in here earlier looking for you,” Debbie said. She noticed a new face at the table and her curiosity took over. “Who’s the cutie?”

“Yeah, he found me,” Brian answered.

“I’m Justin,” the blond answered.

“And you’re here with…” She had a sinking suspicion it was Brian, but he’d never taken any of his tricks to breakfast. The kid looked so young and innocent.

“Me,” Brian answered.

“Well, you be careful, sweetie,” she said to Justin. “I don’t want to see you get hurt.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t,” Justin said.

“You don’t know Brian like I do. He’s not someone you want to get attached to. You’ll just wind up with a broken heart.”

“Deb, you say the nicest things,” Brian said sarcastically.

“No offense, ma’am, but in the time I’ve known Brian, he’s been nothing if not great,” Justin said. “I know what I’m doing.”

“Well don’t say I didn’t warn you,” Debbie said. She took Emmett and Ted’s order and went back to the kitchen.

“Who was that?” Justin asked.

“Debbie is Michael’s mom, and surrogate mother to all the boys on Liberty. She makes a point of butting into everyone’s business,” Brian answered. He tossed a $20 bill on the table and nudged Ted so he could get out.

Emmett stood, letting Justin out, and kept his eyes on the couple as they made their way out of the diner.

“So what do you think that was all about?” Ted asked.

“I don’t know.” Emmett shook his head. “But I can’t wait to find out.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Brian drove in silence, following the directions Justin gave him to get to his apartment. He stopped in front of the building and couldn’t help but cringe.

“Nice place,” he said with a smirk on his face.

“Shut up. It’s all I can afford,” Justin said as he undid his seatbelt. “Do you want to come up?”

Brian looked out the front window and scratched the side of his neck. He took the key out of the ignition and opened the door.

Justin smiled and shook his head. “C’mon,” he said, tugging on Brian’s arm as they made their way to the entrance. He pushed open the door, noticing that the lock was broken again.

Brian held his coat close to his body as they made their way up the five flights of stairs. The inside was worse than the outside, and he could just imagine what the apartments looked like.

They finally stopped at the end of the hallway and Justin took his key out to unlock the door. He opened the door and held the handle with one hand while he tried to pull his key out. His elbow hit the doorframe when it finally pulled free.

He put his keys back into his pocket before grabbing his old backpack from the closet and filling it with the bare necessities.

Brian noticed the only pieces of furniture were the bed, a futon and a lamp. “Going for the minimalist look?”

“Exactly,” Justin answered, coming out of the bathroom with his toothbrush in hand. He went to the kitchen and got a Ziploc bag to put it in. “I say, why bother with such pesky things like a table or chairs.”

“Ready?” Brian asked.

“Yeah.” Justin slung the backpack over his shoulder and locked the door behind them.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“And why would I be interested in anything you have to say?” Michael asked.

“Because we have a common goal,” Ethan answered. “Neither one of us want to see Brian and Justin together.”

“They’re not together,” Michael insisted. “I don’t know what the fuck is going on, but I’m going to get to the bottom of it. Brian would never do anything like this. I don’t know what that twink has on him, but is has to be something big.”

Ethan resisted the urge to roll his eyes. He needed this man’s help, and making him mad wouldn’t improve his chances. From what he’d learned on Liberty Avenue, nothing could make him believe that Brian would let anyone manipulate him into doing anything he didn’t want to do.”Say that’s true,” he said, placating Michael. “I know Justin, and his routine. I can find things out you can’t.”

“All I have to do is get Brian alone and then I’ll know everything. Justin will be out of our lives, and then you can have him all to yourself.”

“Do you honestly believe that?” Ethan asked. “You can’t really be that naïve.”

“Fuck you!” Michael spat and turned to walk away.

“Wait, wait, wait,” Ethan said, grabbing Michael’s arm. “I’m sorry. But you need to open your eyes. Now, I know that there is no way in hell that they are really a couple, but there is something going on.”

“I’ve known Brian since we were fourteen. I know him better than anyone. You don’t know shit.”

“Okay.” Ethan held his hands up in surrender. “But if you change your mind…”

“I won’t.” Michael sat down on the steps and crossed his arms. “You can leave now.”

He watched as the younger man walked away, and pulled out his cell phone. After he got Brian’s voicemail twice, he decided to give up and just wait in the loft. He used his key to let himself into the building and hoped that Brian hadn’t changed the alarm code.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The door to the loft opened and Michael jumped up from the sofa. He couldn’t believe his eyes.

Brian entered the loft with Justin behind him carrying a backpack and messenger bag.

“Brian, I need to talk to you.”

“What is it, Mikey?”

“Alone,” Michael said, glaring at Justin.

“I think I’ll go put my stuff in the bedroom,” the blond said as he made his way up the stairs.

Michael pulled Brian over to the computer desk and sighed. “What the fuck is going on? Why are you suddenly doing things you’ve always claimed to despise?”

Brian pinched the bridge of his nose and contemplated telling his friend what was going on. The way Michael was staring at Justin made him decide against it. “I already told you. Justin is my boyfriend. And there is no way that I will be able to explain this to your satisfaction.”

“This is such bullshit. I know you! And I know that you’d never have a boyfriend. It’s not something you’d do or want,” Michael went on. “Is he the reason you didn’t come to Babylon last night? What does he have on you?”

“My God! Will you listen to yourself?” Brian ran his fingers through his hair. “My relationship with Justin is no one’s business but mine and his.”

“But—” Michael started.

“No,” Brian said as he led his friend to the door. “I’ll call you later. Okay, Michael? I will call you.” He closed the door and leaned back against it with a sigh.

“Everything okay?” Justin asked. He came out of the bedroom and sat down on the sofa. “I don’t want to cause any problems with you and Michael.”

“Don’t worry about it.” Brian sat down at his desk and turned on his computer. “He’ll get over it soon enough.”

tsk, tsk, tsk. What is Ian thinking? he needs to get over himself. I love this b/j thing going on, but I know that there will be tons of drama in the future because of this forced relationship. This was a great chapter Emily.

Brian's offering Justin to stay at the loft for the weekend? He's already losing the battle. lol

I hate Deb cutting Brian down like that the first time she meets Justin. That's one way her and Mikey are totally alike... they don't believe Brian can change his ways at all.

Ian is just downright creepy. :P Should hook him and Mikey up - take care of two pains at ones. *grins*

Deb...well, let's hope that she can come around.

Ian is waaay creepy. And icky, too.

Great chapter! And Brian keeps breaking the rules... loved how he invited Justin to stay with him without a second thought... but Mikey and Ethan can only get more worrisome!
Can't wait for more :)

Can Michael be any stupider than he is already? Even Ian is smarter than him. He is so easily manipulated that I am sure he will join forces with Ian soon. Let's hope Brian stays in protective mode. I look forward to reading more.
