CHAPTER 1:: CHAPTER 2:: CHAPTER 3:: CHAPTER 4

It had been two weeks since that day at Lindz and Mel’s. Two weeks since Justin had had a real conversation with Brian. Everything pretty much remained the same.

Justin would still spend at least 3 days a week talking with Lindsay at the gallery. He had even warmed up to Deb. He found that he liked her best sans Michael. But then again, all things seemed more enjoyable without Michael around. Michael still made his snide remarks despite comments from his friends.

Brian’s face stared back at him from the canvas. He held a paintbrush loaded with black paint and was tempted to destroy the painting. Instead he dabbed some paint off the brush and started shading around it. He was halfway through contemplating what to do next when his cell phone rang.

“Hello,” Justin answered.

“Justin, hey, it’s Nate. What are you up to?”

“Painting. You interrupted my flow.”

“And by flow do you mean staring at a blank canvas with paint from your brush dripping on the floor?”

“No. The canvas on only half blank and the paint is dripping on a tarp. These are brand new floors. Where are you? You’re never this perceptive.”

“Why Justin, you hurt me. To say such things about your best friend. Now, you can make it up to me by buzzing me into your building. And also, you might want to invest in some blinds. I could see every fucking thing in that studio of yours.”

Justin laughed and made his way to the door and buzzed in his friend. “Come on up.” Justin washed his hands in the kitchen and then tossed his paint stained t-shirt into the hamper. He opened the front door just as Nathan was getting off the elevator with two large suitcases rolling behind him.

“You do realize that I only have one bedroom? Meaning that I only have one bed.” Justin asked as Nathan walked through the door.

“Well, as long as I don’t wake up in the morning with you spooned up against me I don’t mind.” Nathan smiled as he flopped down on the couch. “So, you have anything to eat?”

“Takeout menus are in the drawer by the phone in the kitchen,” Justin offered. “I’m gonna go change.”

“Fine,” Nathan sighed as he got up and made his way to the kitchen. “What are you in the mood for?”

“Anything is fine with me. Order whatever you want,” Justin called out as he made his way down the hallway.

~~~~~
Nathan ended up ordering too much and Justin’s nearly empty fridge was filled with pizza boxes and a bag of breadsticks.
It was past midnight before they got to bed. Both had to remember to stay at least partially dressed. Nathan fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. Justin, on the other hand, laid there and thought about what could have prompted the impromptu visit from his friend. For as long as he’d known him, a majority of the time Nathan was always trying to escape something when he did this. Justin sighed deeply. He was determined to get it out of him in the morning.
He woke up 6 hours later to an empty bed and the scent of coffee filling the air. He was still half asleep when he grabbed a long sleeve t-shirt and headed to the kitchen. When he didn’t see Nathan in there he went to find him.
He saw a light illuminating from his studio and headed down the hallway. He opened the door and saw Nathan looking at the painting of Brian. Nathan stood there in only his black boxer-briefs and a cup of coffee in his hand. He was tall, at least 6’4”, lean and had just the right amount of muscle definition. His bright blue eyes were set off by his year-round tan and by his shaggy brown hair. He was always a sight to see.
“I know I’m hot,” Nathan said sipping his coffee. “You can stop staring now.”
Justin laughed and shook his head. “What are you doing in here?”
“Just seeing what you’ve done. So, who’s the guy in the painting?”
“Brian. He is a friend of Lindsay’s.”
“He’s hot. A big step up from Derek.”
“And now we’re leaving the studio,” Justin said ushering Nathan out and turning off the light.
“So, what are you fixing me for breakfast?” Nathan asked as he and Justin got to the kitchen.
Justin went to the fridge and looked in it for a moment before taking out a pizza box and opening it on the counter. “Enjoy.”
“You’re serving me pizza? Cold pizza, at that. What kind of host are you?” Nathan asked in mock exasperation as he got out a slice of the cold pepperoni pizza and took a big bite.
“I am a terrific host. So, are you going to tell me what’s up?” Justin asked cutting right to the chase.
“What are you talking about?” Nathan asked as he swallowed his pizza.
“You almost always do these impromptu drop-ins if something is bugging you.”
“Keyword being almost,” Nathan said. “I got bored and thought I would come see your new place. That’s all, end of story.”
“Okay, fine.” Justin sighed.
For the next couple of hours the two friends caught up with each other’s lives. The only subject Justin wouldn’t broach was Derek. By 9:00 they were both showered and dressed.
“I’m bored,” Nathan said as he came back in the living room, fastening his belt buckle. “Take me somewhere.”
“Nothing good opens up for at least another hour.”
“And what would this something good be?”
“I want you to meet Lindsay. I mean, obviously, you have met her before, but I want you to meet her.”
“Fine, that’s cool. But first, you must feed me some real breakfast food. Two slices of cold pizza does not a breakfast make.”
“Alright.” Justin sighed dramatically. “Let’s go. But it’s my choice.”
~~~~~

“I like your Xterra,” Nathan said getting out of Justin’s car. “The black, very you.”

“I know,” Justin said as he grabbed Nathan’s arm and led him inside the Liberty Diner.

“Very subtle,” Nathan said, looking around. “So, what’s here?”

“Not what, but who. Debbie. I figured you’d have to meet her sooner or later, and I think it should be sooner. Plus, the best time to meet her is when her son isn’t around.”

“Baby,” a voice squealed.

Justin looked around and saw Emmett in the gang’s ‘usual’ booth. “Emmett, hey. What are you still doing here?”

“I’m going in late today. Come sit, sit,” Emmett said a he waved Justin and his friend to his table. “So, who’s your friend?”

“This is Nathan,” Justin said as he and Nathan sat opposite Emmett in the booth. “He’s here from New York.”

Nathan automatically rested his left arm across the back of the booth and extending his right hand. “Nice to meet you, Emmett.”

“Hiya, boys,” Debbie greeted them as she came up to their table. “Who’s the cutie?”

“Debbie, meet Nathan Echolls. Nate, meet Debbie Novotny,” Justin introduced them.

“Pleased to meet you, ma’am.”

“Polite and cute. He’s a keeper,” Debbie said. “Now, what can I get you boys?”

Breakfast went by great. Emmett and Nathan hit it off exceptionally. Debbie even sat down with them when she wasn’t busy. Emmett had to leave at 9:30, but Nathan and Justin stayed until 10:00. Justin was glad that Nathan got to meet Debbie before he saw her with Michael. They said their goodbyes and headed out to meet Lindsay.

~~~~~
Justin and Nathan arrived at the gallery and were immediately spotted by Rena.
“Justin,” Rena greeted him as she stepped from behind the counter. “How are you?”
“Good,” Justin replied to her greeting, giving her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “How are you?”
“Fabulous! This must be the infamous Nathan you’ve been telling us about.”
“Justin, you spoke of me? I’m flattered,” Nathan said with mock adulation as he put his arm around Justin’s shoulder.
“Don’t be. It was all nice things.” Justin smirked.
“Well, when you put it that way,” Nathan joked as he took his arm back.
“Don’t worry. There were plenty of dirty little secrets, too.” Rena smiled.
“Now that’s what I’m talking about.” Nathan winked.
“Ya’ll can go on back. Just knock first. Mr. Kinney is back there with her.”
~~~~~

“How much?” Brian exclaimed.

“Two thousand,” Lindsay said, biting her thumbnail.

“Two thousand fucking dollars?”

“Who knew having a kid would be so expensive?”

“Fine,” Brian said as he wrote and tore out a check.

“Thank you,” Lindsay said as she put the check in her purse. “Gus thanks you, too. So…”

“So…what?” Brian asked as he put his checkbook in the inside pocket of his perfectly tailored black Armani suit jacket.

“So, what’s going on with you and Justin?”

“Nothing is going on.”

“Obviously.”

“So then why are you asking?”

“It’s just that, you two seemed somewhat cozy at brunch a couple weeks ago. And suddenly nothing.”

“Lindsay, it was just fucking. I’m not obsessing over it. Justin doesn’t seem to be obsessing over it. So you don’t need to be obsessing over it.”

“I’m not obsessing over it,” Lindsay said with a small smile.

The truth was that Brian was actually thinking about it more than he let on. That Sunday morning had shaken him up. He never acted like that, especially with a trick. Though, Justin couldn’t really be considered a trick. He wasn’t sure what Justin was to him. A knock at the door brought him out of his thoughts.

“Come in,” Lindsay called.

Brian turned his head and saw as Justin opened the door. A tall hot brunette accompanied him.

“Lindz.” Justin smiled. “You remember Nathan?” Justin asked, gesturing to his friend.

“Yes, of course. I owe you a great deal of gratitude,” Lindsay said to Nathan.

“Nah. Justin would have found his way here eventually.” Nathan shrugged. “I just sped things up, I guess.”

“Oh, and this is Brian Kinney,” Justin said, gesturing to Brian.

“The guy from—” Nathan paused. “Lindsay’s friend. Nice to meet you Mr. Kinney, sir.”

“It’s just Brian,” Brian said as got up and shook Nathan’s extended hand. He turned back to Lindsay. “I’m gonna go now. Talk to you later, Lindz.”

“Bye, Bri.”

Brian stood in the doorway for a moment and watched as Justin and Nathan sat in front of Lindsay’s desk. Who was this Nathan guy with Justin? And what are they to each other? Brian wondered. He closed the door behind him and headed back to Kinnetik.

Just found this, read the five chapters, and enjoyed it very much. I'm not usually fond of AUs where B/J are closer in age, but I like this Justin very much. I like his self-assurance, and that he's not all ga-ga over Brian. Much as I love Brian, I enjoy it when he occasionally get his ego dented, as in the scene in the diner (Get over yourself.) The introduction of Nathan raises all kinds of possibilities. Looking forward to seeing where you go next with the plot.

I, myself, also like B/J stories where they are their 12 years apart, but unfortuantly it didn't work out for me in this story.

The introduction of Nathan raises all kinds of possibilities.

Ah, yes. I am going to have lots of fun with Nathan.

I don't think Brian is too happy about Justin being with Nathan but we all know they are mates and Nathan I feel is straight.
