“Oh, my God,” Emmett repeated.

“Yeah,” Michael said, nodding his head. He braced himself for the barrage of questions that were sure to come his way.

“Is that…David?” Emmett asked. “Didn’t you break up with him…like a long time ago?”

“Wait, what?” Michael asked, his head snapping up.

“Out of all the questions you could ask, that’s the one?” Ted asked, shaking his head.

“Well, Teddy, you know how sensitive Michael is about his weight,” Emmett explained. “I didn’t want to bring it up.”

“So, Doc, you finally came crawling back, dragging your decrepit ass?” Brian asked, smirking.

“It’s nice to see you, too, Brian,” David said as he escorted Michael to the table.

“I’m sure there are tons of questions you’d all like to ask these two, but let’s let them get some food on their plates before we start interrogating them,” Deb suggested.

“What about Lindsay? Shouldn’t we wait for her to get here?” Emmett asked.

“Actually, that’s something else I needed to discuss with you all,” Deb answered. “Lindsay won’t be coming to dinners here at the house anymore. At least not for a while.”

“Why? What’s going on?” Justin asked.

“What hasn’t been going on with her?” Melanie scoffed.

“As some of you may or may not know, Lindsay has moved back in with her parents because she lost her job at the gallery,” Deb explained.

“What?! So who has been handling my work I send in?” Justin asked.

“Probably Rena,” Nathan answered. “She’s been swamped at work. I’ve hardly got the chance to see her in the past couple months.”

“Where the fuck were you when all this was happening?” Brian asked Melanie. “And why didn’t you say anything to us about it?”

“Where the fuck were you? Melanie shot back. “You’re the one she always went to when she was having a problem. Why didn’t you pick up on anything?”

Michael sat in his chair and listened to his friends fight, and felt shortchanged. Sure, he didn’t really want to tell them what was going on, but he didn’t want them to completely ignore it either. He heaved a sigh and pushed a meatball around his plate.

“Why did she move back in with her parents?” Ted asked. “She could have come to any of us; she knows that.”

“I offered to let her stay here with me, but she refused,” Deb answered. “And…there are one or two more slight things that were a factor too.”

“Slight, my ass,” Melanie muttered.

“So you do know what’s up with Lindsay?” Brian asked.

“Of course I do,” Melanie spat.

“Well, tell us,” Emmett prodded, looking back and forth between Melanie and Debbie.

“Lindsay is pregnant,” Melanie answered. “And Sam is the father.”

“What?”

“Oh, my God!”

“Are you serious?!”

“You know speaking of pregnancies,” Michael said, clearing his throat, “I have some news.”

“That’s great, sweetie,” Emmett said, smiling at Michael, “but this news about Lindsay is shocking, to say the least.”

“How did that even happen?” Ted asked. “I mean, I know how it happened, but…how?”

“Don’t look so shocked.” Melanie glared around the table. “It’s not like the first time it ever happened.”

“Wait, who is Sam?” Nathan asked.

“Sam Auerbach,” Debbie answered.

“The artist, Sam Auerbach?” Nathan asked with wide eyes.

“Do you know another one?” Brian asked.

“No, but now I understand why Lindsay is back with her parents. No way would Sam want a kid around.”

“You know him?” Ted asked as his eyes widened with interest.

“Sure.” Nathan shrugged. “My parents used to run around with him when they were younger. And when he would come to the house, they’d always send me to my room or to a friend’s house.”

“So what is the second thing?” Emmett asked, leaning forward on his arms.

“Lindsay has started to date a friend of her parents,” Deb began.

“I bet her parents don’t like that. Their lesbian daughter ‘corrupting’ an innocent woman.”

“Oh, on the contrary.” Debbie shook her head. “They wholeheartedly approve of the man she is dating.”

“What the fuck?!” Brian exclaimed.

“Oh my Lord.” Emmett fanned himself with his hands. “I can’t believe this.”

“Lindsay always did have a soft spot for cock.” Melanie scowled.

“In both senses of the word apparently,” Nathan said.

“Shut up before you make me puke. There’s nothing that puts me off my dinner more than talk of hetero sex,” Brian groaned.

“So, who is she seeing now?” Justin asked.

“Some man that works with her father. Stephen something. I can’t remember his last name,” Deb answered.

“Are you talking about Stephen Collier?” Nathan asked.

“Collier! That’s it. How’d you know that?”

“He used to come into the gallery all the time. Every time I went to visit Rena, he’d be there, looking around and asking to see Lindsay.”

“Are we gonna do anything? Stage an intervention?” Emmett suggested.

“We need to do something,” Ted agreed.

“Yeah, well, count me out,” Melanie interrupted. “I’ve tried to talk to her and reason with her for months and she just ignored me. I’m sick and tired of it.”

“This is just like the craziest news ever.” Emmett shook his head in wonderment. “Lindsay pregnant by Sam Auerbach, living with her parents, and dating a man who works with her father. It is all so unbelievable!”

“Ahem.” Michael cleared his throat loudly until all eyes were on him. “I have some news also that you guys might be interested in.”

“Of course you do.” Debbie patted Michael on his arm, encouraging him to continue.

“Well, I guess you’re all wondering why I’m here with David tonight and why I look the way I do,” Michael began with a heavy breath.

“Where is Ben?” Nathan asked.

“He is in Tibet, researching and stuff,” Michael answered honestly. “And David is here because he is an important part of what’s going on here.”

“Go on.” Debbie nodded her head understandingly.

“I didn’t just get fat,” Michael said, forcing a small smile on his face.

“We know that, honey.” Emmett smiled and raised an eyebrow.

“I got pregnant. And David is the father and Ben doesn’t know and I’m gonna tell him, I am, but I’m just waiting for the right time even though I don’t know when that’ll be because really when can you tell your lover that you unintentionally cheated on him and wound up getting impregnated from said encounter,” Michael rambled.

“Wow, that’s a lot to take in,” Justin commented. “Congratulations?”

“Do you have a name picked out yet?” Emmett asked. “Is it a boy or a girl?”

“Aren’t you guys freaked out by this at all?” Michael exclaimed. “You’re not pausing to think, ‘wow, this is a really fucking weird situation’?”

“We were weirded out at first,” Ted admitted, “but after a little while to get used to it…”

“You already told them?” Michael looked accusingly at his mother.

“Of course, I did. News like this needs time to gestate, and I didn’t want any more stress on you than there is already.”

“No more stress?! Do you have any fucking idea how stressed I’ve been going over and over in my mind how I was going to tell them all of this?!”

“Well, excuse me for trying to help.”

“So, tell us everything,” Emmett demanded. “I want all the juicy details.”

“That was an interesting dinner,” Justin commented as he leaned back against Brian on the couch.

“Yes, it was,” Brian agreed. “And one I never thought I’d experience.

“It feels like a dream or something,” Emmett commented.

“Or a nightmare,” Brian said. “Can you imagine the stretch marks he’s gonna have?”

“Leave it to you to think about that,” Nathan laughed. “Where is Michael, by the way?”

“I think he went out back to get some air,” Ted answered. “David and Deb were hovering over him, and he said he needed to get out.”

“I think I’m in need of some fresh air myself,” Nathan said, standing up and stretching his arms above his head, his shirt lifting revealing his smooth tanned stomach. “Maybe stretch my legs a bit.”

“Hey,” Justin said, grabbing the hem of Nathan’s shirt, “Don’t be an ass. It may be Michael, but he’s still pregnant.”

“I’m always nice.” Nathan smiled and made his way out the back door. He found Michael sitting on a lawn chair, his head resting in his hands. “Hey, there,” he said as he pulled up a chair.

“What the fuck do you want?” Michael snapped, crossing his arms as he leaned back in the chair. “Did you come out here to rag on me?”

“Don’t be like that, Mikey,” Nathan said. “I wouldn’t think of it. I’m one of your biggest supporters.”

“Yeah, right,” Michael scoffed.

“It’s true,” Nathan insisted. “I want to commend you on being able to be so open and honest about what’s going on in your life. I mean, laying everything out on the table… I’m so proud of you, Mikey.”

“Are you on something?” Michael asked, glaring at Nathan.

“Just high on life.” Nathan smiled.

“Whatever.” Michael shook his head and sighed heavily.

“So, are you gonna move back? Or do you think you’ll stay in Philadelphia with Ben?”

“I don’t know,” Michael answered. “And even if I did, I sure as fuck wouldn’t tell you.”

“Hormones going out of control? It’s understandable.” Nathan nodded. “Don’t worry, I’m not offended.”

“Well, what will it take to offend you so you’ll go away?”

“Absolutely nothing,” Nathan answered, placing his hand on Michael’s arm. “I can’t even begin to understand what you’re going through, but I want to be here to help you with anything and everything.”

“I don’t want your help. I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself.” Michael pulled his arm back and stood up. “And I’m not alone. I have my friends. I don’t need you.”

“I’m overstepping aren’t I?” Nathan asked, standing up and putting his hands in his front jeans pockets. “I’ve always had trouble with boundaries. I have a deep natural instinct to help those around me.”

“I’m gonna go inside now,” Michael said, uneasily.

“Just one more thing,” Nathan said suddenly.

“What?” Michael turned around and sighed heavily.

“Are you ever going to tell them about Amanda?”
