By the time Justin convinced Brian to go to Debbie’s weekly family dinner, they were already running late. It had been almost two weeks since the last dinner they attended, and Brian wasn’t too anxious to return just yet. The blowjob in the shower helped him change his mind though. They let themselves into the house and hung their coats on the rack by the door. The rest of the gang was already waiting for them.
“It’s about time you two got here,” Debbie said as they rounded the corner and made their way to the kitchen table. “The food is gonna get cold.”
“Sorry, Deb,” Justin said as he sat down next to Ted, Brian next to him. “We kinda lost track of time,” he added with a grin.
“I bet you did,” Debbie said with a smile. Ever since she had invited Derek to her Christmas dinner she had felt a strain between her and Justin. She realized that he wasn’t too pleased with his ex being at a family gathering, but she still believed Derek to be a good person. After all, he had promised that he would make a donation to the Vic Grassi House. And he didn’t seem like the kind of man who would go back on his word. “So, Teddy,” she said as she turned her attention to the man. “Have you located that donation yet?”
“I’m really sorry, Deb,” Ted said as he wiped marinara sauce off his chin. “I’ve double and triple checked the account numerous times. I even called and asked Tannis and Phillip if it was dropped off at the GLC, but neither of them have seen it.”
“Can you please check again?” Deb asked. The desperation was thick in her voice. “It has to be there. It just has to.”
“What’s wrong, Deb?” Justin asked as he piled the pasta on his plate. He passed the dish to Brian who helped himself to a serving only half the size of Justin’s.
“Oh, we’re having trouble finding the donation Derek was supposed to leave last week.”
“Well, if it was a donation from Derek it shouldn’t be too hard to locate,” Justin said as he sprinkled cheese onto the pasta. He twirled the spaghetti on his fork and took a big bite.
“Why do you say that?” Emmett asked.
Justin finished chewing and swallowed before speaking. “Because, Derek doesn’t make a donation for less than $40,000. Ever. Especially—”
“And I don’t even think they are that incompetent down there,” Brian interrupted before returning his attention back to Gus.
“Especially when it comes to the community.” That was one of the things that Justin admired about Derek. When he truly decided to help, he always made sure that it made an impact.
“Forty thousand dollars!?” Ted almost choked on his wine. You’re telling me that we lost a check for $40,000?”
“No,” Justin said slowly. “I’m telling you that you probably never got it. When he makes a donation, he makes sure everyone and their mother knows about it. He likes the attention it gets him, the recognition.”
“Why would he tell me he would donate it then, if he wasn’t planning to?” Deb asked getting defensive.
“Other than to manipulate you?” Brian asked. He leaned back and stretched his arm across the back of Justin’s chair, his fingers playing with the hair at the nape of the blond’s neck.
“Why…?” Debbie shook her head. “Justin,” she turned to him. “Do you think you could ask him about it? I know you two aren’t on the best of terms, but I don’t know how to contact him.”
“I don’t think so, Debbie.” Justin bit his bottom lip. “I really doubt that it would do any good anyway. But what I can do is give you his contact information.”
“Thanks, Sunshine.” Debbie smiled as she piled more pasta on her plate.
“So,” Emmett said as he poured himself another glass of wine. “Where is that scrumptious morsel at tonight?”
“Who?” Justin asked once he realized the question was directed at him.
“Nathan,” Emmett answered like it was the most obvious answer ever.
“Oh.” Justin nodded his head. “He has a date tonight,” he added with a smile.
“That’s great, “Ben said. “I know how hard his last break-up hit him. It’s good he’s back dating.”
“Well, I think after what happened…well, he decided he needed to get out more.” Justin laughed.
~~~~~
Brian reluctantly pulled out of Justin and rolled on his back. He tied off the condom and tossed it on the floor. He pulled the blonde into his arms and kissed the back of his neck.
“That was great,” Justin moaned.
“Aaamazing,” Brian agreed.
“I don’t think I’ll be able to move.”
“Give me a couple minutes and I’ll help you,” Brian said as he ran his hand down Justin’s torso.
The phone made a shrill ring, breaking the silence in the loft.
“Are you gonna get that?” Justin asked when he realized the caller wasn’t going to hang up.
Brian reluctantly released Justin and grabbed the cordless on the nightstand. He looked at the Caller ID before answering. “Hey, Mikey.”
Justin rolled on his back and covered his eyes with his arm. He only half listened as Brian talked to Michael. He was about to fall asleep when he felt Brian’s lips on his skin. “So what did Mikey want?”
“He wanted to know if I was going to Babylon tonight,” Brian answered.
“Oh?”
“Yeah. But,” Brian said as he moved Justin’s arm and looked him in the eyes, his hand roaming southward. “I told him he would just have to make due with the Professor.”
“You know.” Justin smiled. “All of a sudden, I’m not so tired.”
~~~~~
The gang found themselves in the diner on Saturday morning, the long night at Babylon still taking its toll. Emmett was leaning against the wall, and Michael was sitting next to Ben, his head on the table. Brian, Justin and Nathan sat on the other side, no hang over evident on them.
Ted came rushing into the diner with a piece of paper in his hand. He hurried to the counter where Debbie was standing. “Deb, Deb,” he said excitedly. “C’mere!”
“What is it, Ted?” Debbie smacked her gum and pulled the pen from her hair.
“Tannis called me this morning. She asked me to stop by the center. There was a donation left for the Vic Grassi House,” he told her excitedly. “And you’ll never guess how much it was for?” He practically bounced in his seat as he waited for her to speak.
“Well don’t keep me in suspense,” Debbie shrieked.
“It was for $100,000!” Ted exclaimed as he handed her the paper he had in his hand. “Can you believe that?”
“One hundred thousand dollars?!” The pen fell from her grasp and she clutched at her multi-colored vest with one hand and held the letter with the other. “One hundred fucking thousand dollars,” she repeated while scanning the letter. “Who was it, Teddy?”
“No one knows,” Ted said as he took off his scarf and jacket. “It was just sitting on Tannis’ desk this morning with a letter saying that they wish to remain anonymous.”
“Well shit…” Debbie was speechless. She put the letter on the counter and brushed away the tears forming in her eyes. “I can’t believe that… Oh, Teddy, we have to find out who this person is. We have to thank them.”
“I’ll try, Deb. But, I think it would be best if we respect their wishes to remain anonymous.” Ted smiled and turned to sit at the table, but he noticed that all the seats were taken. He started to go back to the counter to sit down, but was stopped by a hand on his arm.
“I think I’m gonna go,” Nathan said as he grabbed his coat from behind him. He stood up and threw a $10 bill on the table.
“Me, too,” Justin said as he leaned over and gave Brian a kiss. He intended it to be just a quick peck, but Brian pulled him closer, deepening the kiss. He could taste the coffee and cigarettes in Brian’s mouth, and only pulled away when he felt the need for air. “I’ll see you later.” He put some money on the table before leaving the diner with Nathan. “So why’d you do it?” Justin asked once they were outside.
“Why’d I do what?” Nathan asked, feigning ignorance, as he zipped up his coat.
“Don’t play dumb, Nathan. It doesn’t look good on you,” Justin said as he bumped his friend with his shoulder.
“I don’t know.” Nathan sighed and shook his head. “It’s just that, when I was at the diner this past week, I kept hearing her talk about all the great things Derek’s money was going to do for the hospice. She was so excited. And then when she realized the money wasn’t coming, she just wasn’t herself.”
“You should say something,” Justin suggested. “Maybe then she’ll stop giving you such a hard time.”
“No. I don’t want her to know it was me. I don’t want her to like me just because I gave some money to her brother’s house,” Nathan said leaving no room for argument. “If she’s going to like me, it’s going to be because of me, not how much money I donate to the hospice.”
“It could be a while you know,” Justin joked.
“Yeah, I know.” Nathan smiled as he slung his arm around Justin’s shoulders. “But I don’t mind waiting.”
