Justin slowly woke up and glanced at the clock—7:30. He could feel the warmth of Brian’s arms around him and hoped and prayed that last night was just an awful dream. The most obvious clue that it wasn’t was the fact that they were both still partially dressed.
Brian felt the exact moment Justin woke up. He, himself, had been up for hours. He kept going over an over in his mind what he wanted to say to Justin but, now, he couldn’t remember one damn thing. All he could focus on was the fact that, if he said one wrong thing, he could lose him for good. But when was he ever able to control what came out of his mouth.
Justin took a deep breath and moved to extricate himself from Brian, but was held back by strong arms. “Let me go, Brian.”
“No.”
“No?” Justin asked incredulously as he tried to move again. “Fuck you, Brian. I tell you that I don’t want to see you and you take that as an invitation to come into my home and sleep in my bed? Let me go.”
“Not until you agree to talk to me,” Brian replied as he tightened his grip.
“There’s nothing to talk about!” Justin exclaimed as he forcefully yanked himself free. He picked up his discarded jeans and put them on as he headed out of the bedroom.
“Yes, there is,” Brian insisted as he put on his own jeans and followed Justin into the kitchen.
“Everything that needed to be said was said last night,” Justin said as he prepared the coffee maker.
“Nothing was said last night!” Brian exclaimed. “You owe it to me to talk to me.”
“I owe you?” Justin asked as he slammed the coffee pot in the maker. “How the fuck do you figure that?”
“Because you promised me that you would stop jumping to conclusions and being a little drama princess whenever a problem arises.”
“Do you really think now is the best time to be insulting me? And I’m not jumping to conclusions. They’re right there,” Justin said pointing in front of him.
“You’re making assumptions about everything! Do you honestly think that if I knew who Derek was I wouldn’t tell you?”
“How could you not know, Brian?!” Justin yelled. “You were in my fucking home; in my fucking bed!”
“It’s not like I stuck around to cuddle with him or look around! I didn’t even know he had a boyfriend.” Brian groaned in frustration. “And you. Maybe if you would have ever told me his name we could have avoided this.”
“What? So now it’s my fault that my asshole ex-boyfriend’s name makes me want to puke?”
“No.” Brian shook his head. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. This was not going the way he wanted it to. He wasn’t supposed to be making accusations or arguing with Justin. He was supposed to be fixing his fuck up.
“Did you know he called, too?” Justin asked as he poured his coffee. “Is that something else you failed to mention to me?”
“Yes,” Brian answered truthfully as he leaned his arms on the island.
“Why?”
“Nathan didn’t want you anymore stressed than you already were. He knew you were nervous about the dinner with your mom.”
“So he thought that an ambush would be better?” Justin asked sarcastically.
“No. We were going to tell you today,” Brian said. “He was only doing what he thought was best. I was, too.”
“Well, I’m a big boy, Brian,” Justin said. “I should be the one to decide what I can or can’t handle.” He finished off his coffee and rinsed out the cup in the sink. “And another thing. I might have promised that I’d listen and not jump to conclusions, but you also promised that you’d always be honest with me. You should have told me he called. You’re in a relationship with me, not with Nathan.”
“I know. I should have told you,” Brian said, running his fingers through his hair.
”Yes, you should have.”
“So what now?”
“I don’t know.”
“So what are you going to do about Derek?”
“I don’t know.” Justin sighed and scratched the back of his neck. “I know he won’t leave me alone until I talk to him.”
“He told me he wants you back,” Brian said as he shredded a napkin lying on the island.
“He doesn’t want me back. He just wants to win, to prove he can have whatever he wants.”
“That’s what he said. That he always wins.”
“Well, I’m not some thing that can be won. The sooner he realizes that, the sooner he’ll leave.” Justin poured a fresh cup of coffee and added an obscene amount of sugar to it. He placed it in front of Brian and dumped the remainder of the pot down the sink. “I’m surprised you didn’t use this as an out.”
“What the fuck do you mean by that?”
“I mean, that if you have a hard time saying the word relationship, how much could you actually want to be in one?”
“Just because I have a hard time talking about something doesn’t mean I don’t want it. I thought we already had this discussion about people telling me what I want.” He took a drink of coffee before continuing. “I was going with you to have dinner at your mother’s house, Justin. If that doesn’t tell you something, I don’t know what will.”
“I know that, Brian!” Justin exclaimed. “Don’t you think I know that? It’s just,” he sighed heavily, “I have all these conflicting things running through my head.” He leaned against the counter. “I think that before we discuss anything, I need to have a clear head. And in order to accomplish that I need some space.”
“Okay.” Brian nodded.
“And,” Justin added. “I am going to talk to Derek. I didn’t listen to anything he had to say when we broke up,” he said before Brian could say anything. “I just left. I at least owe him that.”
“You don’t owe him shit,” Brian argued.
“Maybe, maybe not. But its something I have to do.”

Derek sat at the counter in the Liberty Diner and tried his best to touch as least as possible. He kept an interested look plastered to his face while he only half listened to the old waitress with the tacky vest and hideous red wig. Why anyone would want to come here was beyond him. But, he knew that this was just the kind of place Justin loved. All he had to do was mention Justin’s name to the tacky waitress and he was regaled with stories about Sunshine. He just finished doctoring his coffee to make it somewhat suitable for drinking when a fist connected with his face, knocking him to the ground.
“What the fuck?” He looked up and saw Nathan shaking his hand. He stood up and got in taller man’s face. “Are you fucking insane?”
“Nathan!” Debbie screeched. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing? Derek here is Sunshine’s friend.”
“No, he isn’t,” Nathan said as he flexed his fingers and sat down next to Derek. He hadn’t hit anyone ever before in his life, and he knew his hand would be killing him all day. “He’s Justin’s ex-boyfriend.”
“Still, that’s no reason to hit him,” she said as she took hold of Derek’s arm and coerced him back on the bar stool while examining his face.
“It is when he’s a complete asshole.”
“You fucker,” Derek said as he lightly touched his swollen cheek. “I should have you arrested for assault.”
“It’d never stick. Can I get some ice?” Nathan asked Debbie before turning back to Derek. “What are you even doing here? You usually avoid these places like the plague.”
“I should be asking you that.” Derek laughed. “I just figure, if I’m going to get back with Justin, I should assimilate myself into the things he likes.”
“You’re wasting your time. There’s no way in hell he’ll go back to you,” Nathan told him as Debbie plopped a glass of ice in front of him.
“Here.” She glared at him before handing Derek a nicely made makeshift icepack. “Here, sweetie. Put this on your face.”
“Thank you, Debbie.” Derek smiled his fake, sweet smile.
Nathan took an ice cube and ran it over his knuckles. He flinched slightly as the cold hit his skin. He scoffed and shook his head as he watched Debbie dote on Derek. The asshole had been in town less than 24 hours and he already had Debbie wrapped around his finger.
“And what is your problem?” Debbie asked with a hand on her hip and a scowl on her face.
“Nothing. I just can’t believe you’ve bought whatever bullshit he’s fed you. I didn’t know you were so easily manipulated.”
“You listen to me, you little asshole. Derek has made a very generous contribution to The Vic Grassi House, and he has been nothing but a perfect gentleman since the second he walked in that door. All I seem to hear from you lately are snarky, sarcastic comments.”
“So the fuck what? When you first met me you were fawning all over me, too. This is what he does. He’s all nice and charming to get what he wants. And as soon as he is through with you, he’ll discard you like you’re nothing. What the fuck has Derek done to earn your trust? Other than mention that he knows Justin.”
Debbie wasn’t sure how to respond.
“I didn’t know Justin meant so little to you. That you could disregard his feelings so easily.”
“You know as well as I do that that is a crock of shit. Sunshine’s become like one of my own these past few months.” Debbie jabbed her finger at Nathan.
“Then why don’t you try showing it and kick Derek here out on his ass?”
“How do I know that you aren’t trying to get rid of Derek so you can have Justin for yourself?”
“Please, Deb.” Nathan scoffed. “If I wanted Justin for myself, I’d have him. But I don’t. Not now, not ever. Why would I do something that would obviously ruin my friendship with him?”
“Hell, if I know. With all the games you play, there’s no telling.” Debbie crossed her arms on her chest.
“Anyway.” Nathan smirked. “I’m not Mikey. I’m not pining away for that one day when my best friend will finally fuck me.”
“Don’t you dare bring Michael into this.”
“You know,” Nathan continued. “You should know by now that if I do something it has a good reason behind it.”
“And just what is your good reason for hitting Derek?” She took the glass of ice away and set it on the counter behind her. “Other than the fact that he is Justin’s ex and an ‘asshole’?”
“It’s not my place to tell you that,” Nathan told her. “But, how do you think Brian is going to react when he sees you doting on Derek?”
“He won’t care one way or the other,” she answered assuredly. “He’s not the jealous type so I don’t see it being a problem.”
“You have got to be kidding me! You’ve known Brian since he was what, 14? That’s 18 years, and you still don’t know him.”
“What? Are you telling me you do? I don’t think so.”
“I know him well enough to know that he’s gonna feel betrayed by your actions concerning Derek.”
“Well, Brian knows me well enough to know the kind of person I am. I give everyone a chance until they prove me wrong. Which, by the way, you have done repeatedly.”
“What have I done repeatedly? Been honest and not take all the bullshit that little Mikey flings at me? I’m not gonna apologize to you for my actions. I do what I want.”
“Well, I’m not going to apologize either,” Deb said as she crossed her arms across her chest. “And I know that Brian won’t fault me for talking and being kind to Derek.”
The door opened and Brian walked in.
“Well, we’re about to find out.” Nathan smirked as he turned around and leaned against the counter. He glanced over and saw Derek stiffen in his seat.
