Michael surprised himself by not reacting to Nathan’s question. He raised an eyebrow and formed a confused expression on his face. “Amanda?” Is that someone I’m supposed to know?”
“I would say that you and Amanda have a very close relationship,” Nathan answered. “It’s almost like you’re the same person.”
“Well, I’m afraid that I don’t know any woman named Amanda.” Michael shrugged. “Maybe you have me confused with someone else.”
“I didn’t expect you to know a woman named Amanda,” Nathan said.
“Well then why the fuck are you asking me about her then?”
“I never said that Amanda was a woman.”
“So Amanda is a drag queen then?” Michael asked.
“No.” Nathan shook his head. “I wouldn’t say that.”
“Well, then who is he?”
“He is someone who has gotten into a bit of a jam, so to speak. He felt alone and didn’t know where to turn,” Nathan began. “He felt isolated from his friends and family, and it even got to a point where he felt he couldn’t show his face around them.”
“He surely had his reasons, I bet.”
“I’m sure he did,” Nathan agreed. “But then it came to a point where he couldn’t not see them. He knew he couldn’t see them as himself after the big deal he made over not seeing them anymore, so he decided to create a persona; someone they’d never suspect.”
“That sounds like an interesting story.” Michael nodded his head. “I hope that he can work through everything.”
“I bet you do,” Nathan agreed.
“Well, I’m gonna go inside now.”
“I know that sometimes people don’t like change,” Nathan said, continuing when Mikey stopped and turned around. “They get set in their ways and it becomes comfortable for them, almost like a security blanket. But I have to be honest with you, Mikey…stupid does not look good on you.”
“Fuck you,” Michael spat. He stomped inside, slamming the door behind him.
“Is everything alright?” David asked, rising from his seat when he saw the distressed look on Michael’s face. “Did something happen? Is the baby okay?”
“The baby is fine,” Michael sighed. “I had a run-in with Nathan and he said some things to me that got me riled up.”
“What did he say?”
“He knows,” Michael paused, leaning closer to David and whispering, “he knows about Amanda.”
“How?” David led Michael to a secluded corner so they’d have more privacy.
“I don’t know,” Michael whispered in an agitated manner. “But he does and I’m scared that he’s gonna tell Justin or Brian.”
“Why don’t you tell them before he does then?” David asked.
“Because I don’t know if he is even going to say anything,” Michael answered, “and I don’t want to risk telling them if I don’t need to.”
“You’re gonna have to let them know eventually,” David commented. “You can’t keep something like this a secret. Especially after everything that’s happened.”
“No! That’s exactly why I can’t tell them.” Michael shook his head. “If they knew all the shit I did, they’d never forgive me. I betrayed them all so much!”
“Look,” David said, putting his hands on Michael’s shoulders comfortingly. “Everything comes out eventually. Don’t you think it’ll be better for them to know now and let them get over it besides letting it lie dormant until the day it blows up in your face at the worst possible time?”
“Dramatic much?” Michael raised an eyebrow, trying to lighten the moment.
“I’m serious.”
“I know, but I— I just can’t tell them.” Michael shook his head. “Not now.”
“Okay. You can wait until you’re ready,” David acquiesced. “And if you want, we can tell them together.”
“Really?”
David nodded. Really.”
“Thank you so much.” Michael breathed a sigh of relief and wrapped his arms around David. “You’re so good to me.”
“Are you ready to go now?”
“Yeah, let me just say good-bye to my Ma and Brian.” Michael said as he pulled out of David’s arms, pausing when he saw Nathan come back into the house.
“Come on.” David took Michael’s hand in his and led him over to his friends.
“Hey, Mikey, are you leaving already?” Brian asked.
“Yeah, I get tired a lot easier ever since I became pregnant.”
“I can only imagine,” Ted commented.
“I’ll see you guys later.” Michael waved as he headed to the door.
“Bye, sweetie,” Emmett called.
“Later, Mikey.” Brian waved to his friend.
“Wow, what a night.” Emmett shook his head after the door closed behind Michael and David.
“Crazy, huh?” Nathan asked as he sat down on the couch next to Justin.
”I just don’t know how Ben doesn’t know about this,” Brian commented. “I mean, the Professor is a fairly intelligent guy. You think he would have noticed that something was amiss.”
“Maybe Michael didn’t start showing until after Ben went on his trip to Tibet,” Justin suggested. “This girl I went to high school with got pregnant her senior year. No one knew she was pregnant until just a couple months before she gave birth.”
“Any one can hide a pregnancy with baggy clothes,” Brian argued.
“Not this girl.” Justin shook his head. “She hated baggy clothes. Even when she did start showing, she didn’t do anything to hide it.”
“Do you think we should tell him?” Emmett asked.
“No, definitely not, “ Deb interrupted. “That is something that Michael needs to do on his own.”
“Well, he won’t have to wait very long to tell him,” Nathan said. “When I was outside I got a call from Ben. He said he cut his trip short and was headed back here to visit with everyone before going back to Philly.”
~~oo00oo~~
“I am so hungry,” Michael groaned as he entered his apartment. “I’m gonna order some Thai. Do you want anything?”
“I couldn’t possibly eat another bite after that feast your mom cooked for us,” David answered, rubbing his stomach. “But I guess you can order me some for tomorrow. There is nothing better than warmed up, day old Thai food. Anything is fine.”
“The food should be here in 30 minutes,” Michael said after he got off the phone. “I’m gonna take a quick shower and then get dressed for the night.”
“Take your time,” David said. “I’ll clean up around the apartment and wait for the food to get here.”
“That sounds great,” Michael sighed. “The money is on the counter.”
“Keep your money,” David said to Michael’s retreating back, “I’ll take care of it.”
“Thanks,” Michael called over his shoulder.
David started in the kitchen, washing the dishes in the sink and wiping down the counter tops. He knew it was pointless since Michael would just get it dirty again when the food came, but cleaning was relaxing for him. He then made his way to the living room and started picking up all the baby and pregnancy books Michael had been reading and organized them into a neat stack.
He paused when his eye caught a spiral notebook with POSSIBLE BABY NAMES –FIRST AND MIDDLE written across the top. Letting his curiosity get the better of him, he sat down on the couch and started reading over the names. Under the BOY column the first name on the list was BRIAN AIDEN. He rolled his eyes and shook his head.
“How fucking predictable,” he muttered as he read further down the list. “Benjamin, Bruce Wayne, Peter Parker, Arthur Curry, Matthew Michael Murdock, Oliver Queen. Gotta love that last one.”
Under the GIRL column there were two names: BRIANA ADRIANA and LOIS LANE. “This kid is gonna have one very interesting life,” he said as he set the notebook back on the coffee table. He finished cleaning quickly and sat down on the couch and waited for the food to arrive. There would definitely be much discussion about the name of his child.
The shower stopped and he could hear Michael moving around the bedroom. He was just about to get up and go to the bedroom when the buzzer rang. This was better, David told himself. Michael was always easier to reason with when he had a full stomach.
“Are you gonna get that?” Michael yelled from the bedroom when the buzzer rang a second time.
“Yeah, I’m getting it,” David yelled back. He hit the release button by the door and waited anxiously for the deliveryman to get there.
“Is the food not here yet?” Michael asked as he made his way into the living room. He was wearing a pair of oversized sweats and an old T-shirt of Deb’s.
“No yet, but he does have to climb up six flights of stairs,” David reasoned.
“Yeah, whatever,” Michael grumbled.
A knock at the door sounded the arrival of the food.
“What perfect timing.” David smiled as he opened the door. “Right on ti— You’re not the food.” He looked back at Michael and arched his eyebrow.
“What are you doing here?” Michael asked as he rubbed his protruding stomach.
“What? You thought you could just shut me out of your life and I’d let you? There’s something you should know about me. I don’t give up that easily. Now…can I come in?”
