“I think there’s something wrong with our electrical work,” Justin said as he sat down next to Brian in their regular booth at the diner. “I keep hearing this humming sound.”

“I think you’re hearing things, Sunshine,” Brian said, waving a waitress over and holding up his coffee cup. “Cause I can’t hear the alleged humming sound.”

“Or maybe in your advanced age, your hearing just isn’t what is used to be,” Justin said with a smirk.

“Fucker.” Brian playfully slapped Justin on the back of his head. “Do I need to keep you and Nathan apart? He’s obviously a bad influence on you.”

“Did I hear my name?” Nathan asked as he slid into the booth and took a drink from Brian’s coffee cup. He set it back on the table, winced and wiped the sides of his mouth with his hand, giving and exaggerated shudder. “Think you have enough sugar in there, Brian?”

“Keep it.” Brian pushed the cup in front of Nathan and signaled to the waitress. “Who knows where your mouth has been,” he added with a smirk.

“You can fantasize all you want,” Nathan said with a matching smirk.

“Please, like I—” Brian started.

“You two should really just get a room, fuck and get it over with already,” Justin interrupted. He looked at Brian and Nathan, shaking his head. “All this built up sexual tension is really making me uncomfortable.”

“Oh how I’ve tried.” Nathan sighed and shook his head.

“And you’re welcome to stop at any time,” Brian replied.

“You know you love it,” Nathan said with a sexy smile. Under the table he moved his foot along a leg and pressed on a crotch.

“Hey!” Justin jumped and moved back slightly. “Careful.”

The bell above the door rang, hailing Emmett and Ted’s arrival. Ted was leading Emmett by his arm, and sat in the booth next to Nathan. Emmett’s usually cheerful face was pale and blank.

“Emmett, what’s wrong?” Justin asked. When he didn’t get an answer, he turned his attention to Ted. “What happened?”

“The guy Emmett has been seeing, Drake, is a complete psycho!” Ted exclaimed.

“What?” Justin gaped.

“Oh yeah.” Ted nodded. “He set up cameras and bugs at Emmett’s place.”

“Oh, my God, are you serious?” Nathan asked. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a flask and unscrewed the top before handing it to Emmett. “Here, drink this.”

Emmett took the flask and took a couple drinks from it. “Thanks,” he replied, keeping hold of the flask. “I needed that.”

“So, start from the beginning,” Nathan urged, “cause I thought Drake seemed pretty normal.”

“I did, too. He was always so sweet and loving and romantic,” Emmett said with a sad smile on his face. “And he always seemed to know the perfect things to do on dates for us. He was perfect.”

“So how did he go from perfect boyfriend to complete psycho?” Justin asked.

“Well, the past week I started hearing this weird buzzing sound. Almost like someone was humming sporadically throughout the day,” Emmett answered.

“Wait.” Justin put his hand up. “Did it sound like this? Hmmmzzzz…”

“More or less.” Emmett shrugged his shoulders.

Justin looked pointedly at Brian and then turned his attention back to Emmett.

“Anyway, at first I thought it might have been the electrical. It wouldn’t have been the first time something screwy happened, but my electrician told me he couldn’t find anything wrong. So then I just decided to investigate the problem myself.”

“And that’s when you found the bugs?” Brian asked.

“Yeah.” Emmett took another swig from the flask and sighed. “I got this feeling and started taking everything off the shelves. After I was finished I found seven cameras and five bugs.”

“That’s insane,” Justin gasped and shook his head.

“When I confronted him about it, he told me he only did it because he loved me.” Emmett shuddered. “He just went on and on and on… That’s when Teddy arrived.”

“Do you think he’ll try anything?” Nathan asked. “Have you filed a report?”

“I don’t think he will, but I’m still gonna go down to the station and talk with Carl,” Emmett answered.

“You’re not staying in your apartment, are you?” Justin asked.

“Not for a while, no.” Emmett shook his head. “Teddy offered to let me stay with him and Blake for the time being.”

“Well that’s good.” Justin breathed a sigh of relief. “I don’t even want to think of what I’d do if something happened like that to me. It’s completely creepy.”

“I know what I’d do,” Brian said. He took a drink from his coffee and wiped the edge of his mouth with a napkin. “I’d make the bastard live to regret the fact that he even thought invading my privacy was acceptable.”

Amanda had stopped eating the minute she heard the words ‘camera’ and ‘bugs.’ She listened with rapt attention as Emmett explained his situation. The circumstances were completely different, she told herself. Emmett had only been seeing this Drake guy for a few weeks. She, on the other hand, had been in Brian’s life for more than half of theirs. But after hearing Brian describe all the gruesome things he would do, she started having second thoughts.

“Remind me never to get on your bad side,” Nathan said.

“Well, since you’ve never really been on my good side,” Brian replied.

“Oh, shit!” Justin exclaimed. “Do you think the humming I’m hearing are bugs or cameras?”

“Well who would want to bug our apartment?” Brian asked.

“Who wouldn’t want to bug your apartment?” Nathan asked with a laugh.

“Why go to all that trouble when they can just go to the backroom of Babylon every other night?” Ted commented.

“I think I’m gonna go home and check things out,” Justin said. “I’ll catch up with you guys later.”

Fuck! Amanda quickly tossed a ten on the table, grabbed her bag, and made her way over to the guys’ table.

“Brian! Justin! I’m so glad I ran into you two!” Amanda exclaimed. “I needed to tell you that I won’t be able to come clean next week. I had some previous engagements that I forgot about and just now remembered. So… if it is alright, I can clean today and make it all nice.”

“Nah.” Justin shook his head. “You don’t need to do that. The loft is still pretty clean, and you need a break anyway.”

“No, really, I want to!” Amanda insisted. If she didn’t get in that damn apartment before Justin or Brian did the consequences would be disastrous. “I really, really do!”

“While I admire your enthusiasm and dedication,” Brian said with a sarcastic smile, “there’s really no need for you to do that. In fact, I insist that you take off the next week…with pay.”

“W-with pay? Really?” Amanda asked. For a moment she let herself get lost in the idea of getting paid for doing nothing. She loved getting paid for doing nothing! She quickly came crashing back down when she realized it would be that much longer before she could get back into that apartment.

“Of course,” Nathan chimed in. “You’ve been working so…hard, and deserve a break.”

“Thank you guys,” Amanda said with a forced smile. In fact, I think I’m gonna start enjoying my work free week right now.” She waved to the gang and walked quickly out the door.

“Now you’ll have all next week to look around the apartment,” Brian said as he wrapped his arm around Justin and pulled him against his chest.

“I guess,” Justin sighed. He looked out the window and couldn’t help but think that there was definitely something off about Amanda.

Amanda groaned as she adjusted her bag on her shoulder and made her way to Justin and Brian’s apartment as fast as her short swollen legs would carry her. Who knew being a woman meant having to carry around so much shit. Being a man was so much simpler and easier. She undid another button on her blouse and thanked Marilyn for convincing her to get that push-up bra.

“Hello there!” She waved at a man coming out of the building and ran over to him, making sure to shake her chest as much as she could.

“Can I help you?” The man asked, raising his eyebrow.

“I’m so sorry,” Amanda said, tugging at the collar of her blouse, exposing more of her skin. “I was in such a rush this morning and seem to have forgotten my key. It’s horribly embarrassing, and my boyfriend is always getting on me about it, too.”

“You live in the building? This one right here?” The man pointed to the apartment building he just exited.

“Yeah.” Amanda nodded.

“Well, then you should know, for occasions such as the one you’re in, the building has a backup.” He walked over to the entrance and opened a hidden panel on the wall next to the door. “Just enter in your pass code, and scan your thumb.”

“Oh, silly me,” Amanda chuckled. “I must have forgotten about it.”

“I’m sure,” the man said sarcastically as he made his way down the sidewalk.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck!” Amanda kicked the side of the building and immediately regretted it. “Damn it, that hurts.”

She buttoned her shirt back up and began pacing. It was imperative that she got into that apartment before Brian and Justin did. Suddenly she realized how she was going to do it. Her key, of course! She shook her head and let out a sigh of relief. The hormones from the pregnancy must be messing with her mind. Before, she had a mind as sharp as a tack.

Amanda used her key to let herself into the building and made her way up in the elevator, practically dancing from the excitement.

“Everything is going to work out, and they’ll never know about the bugs,” she assured herself. “And if any questions do arise, I’ll just tell them about the pregnancy and blame it on the hormones.”

As soon as the doors to the elevator opened, Amanda ran to Brian and Justin’s apartment and unlocked the door. The alarm beeped and she opened the panel to punch in the code as she kicked the door shut behind her. “4-9-7-2 enter. 4-9-7-2 enter,” she repeated when the alarm didn’t stop. “Shit. 4-9-7-2 enter.” Amanda firmly pressed down on the buttons to make sure she didn’t accidentally miss a number. The alarm began to blare loudly throughout the loft.

“Fuck it,” she said, reaching for the door handle. When it wouldn’t open, she began to panic even more. She tried every way she could think of to open the door and nothing worked. The only good thing was that the alarm finally stopped.

Amanda leaned against the wall and fell to the floor. When the hell did the alarm code change? For as long as she could remember Brian’s alarm codes had always been the same. It must be Justin who changed it. “Stupid blond twink,” she muttered as she closed her eyes and rested her head against the wall.

She was just about to doze when she heard voices on the other side of the door. She stood up, looked through the eyehole and saw Brian and Justin on the other side.

“It’s locked,” Justin said as he jiggled the handle. “I guess the new system worked. Or do you think it was a false alarm?”

“Couldn’t have been,” Brian said as he took out his key. “The company said a code was punched in three times.”

Amanda sucked in her breath and grabbed her bag as she quickly took off her shoes and ran to the back of the loft, hiding in the closet in the laundry room.

“Wait.” Justin put his hand on Brian’s. “Don’t you think we should wait until the police get here? You don’t know who is in there.”

“It has to be someone with a key,” Brian reasoned as he unlocked and opened the door. “Our locks were designed to be tamperproof. There are only four people with a key to the loft; you, me, Nathan, and Amanda.”

“Wait, when did Nathan get a key?” Justin asked.

“He said you gave it to him,” Brian said with a growl. “That fucker.”

“So you think Amanda broke in? Why would she do that?” Justin followed Brian down the hall, opening doors and quickly jumping back.

“I have no idea,” Brian answered distractedly. “Will you stop doing that? It’s not like she’ll jump out and attack you. And even if she did, you could take her.”

“Really? You think so?” Justin asked.

“Of course,” Brian whispered. He put his finger to his lips and nodded toward the laundry room.

“There?” Justin mouthed and pointed to the supply closet.

Brian put his hand on the handle and slowly turned the knob, mouthing, “One, two, three,” before he yanked the door open.
